How to Structure a Great Tennis Session – Every Time

You don’t need a hundred drills to be a good coach. What you really need is a clear structure that keeps your player focused, motivated, and improving.

Here’s a simple and effective session format that works for beginners, juniors, and adults alike:

🧱 1. Warm-Up with Intention (5–10 min)

Don’t just run around cones. Add movement + ball control + awareness.

Example: Mini-tennis with targets, dynamic footwork drills.

🎯 2. Technical Focus (10–20 min)

Pick one theme only. Less is more. Work on it with 1–2 key exercises.

Example: “Topspin forehand” – progress from shadow swings → feeding → live rally.

🧠 3. Tactical or Decision-Making Drill (10–15 min)

Now move into real situations. Let the player apply what they’ve learned in a more open context.

Example: Cross-court rally with “open court attack” rule.

🎮 4. Game Play with Constraints (10–15 min)

Finish with a point-based game – but with a twist that reinforces learning.

Example: “Bonus point if you win with a topspin forehand.”

🗣️ 5. Feedback & Wrap-Up (2–5 min)

Ask: “What did you notice today?” or “What will you focus on next time?”
Give 1 key praise + 1 growth point.

💡 Bonus Tip:

Have a template you use each session. It builds consistency and confidence – for both you and your players.
